President Yuzo Maruyama reviewed the basic care of pines and differences between black and red pines.

Oct. 16 Meeting

The topic: shaping and pruning of deciduous trees.  Members are encouraged to bring deciduous trees, especially bushy specimens and those needing styling.  Please be considerate and avoid conversations during the presentation.  The schedule will be:

7:00 – 7:10       Business

7:10 – 8:10       Lecture

8:10 – 8:20       Break/Sale of raffle tickets

8:20 – 8:45       Member critique/demonstration

8:45 – 9:00       Raffle

2014 New Year’s Dinner

We need a preliminary head count for the BSK New Year’s dinner on Jan 24, 2014.  The cost per person will be about $25.  Please RSVP to bonsaisekiyukai@gmail.com.

Reminder: Capital City Bonsai Association Show on Oct. 26-27

See details below on the annual autumn show by the four Sacramento area clubs.  Members and their guests are invited to stay on Saturday for a free 5PM get-together with appetizers, drinks and a raffle. Members can come from 3PM-5PM on Friday to the Shepard Garden and Arts Center to help set up and to drop off donations.  On Saturday BSK will need 3 members to monitor the entry and tables from 1PM-5PM. If you would like to partake in the potluck lunch on Sat. and/or Sun., bring a food item (enough for 6 people) on Sat. and/or Sun. mornings.  If you are interested in selling trees, contact Lucy Sakaishi-Judd at juddbonsai@att.net.  The show raises money to support the Golden State Bonsai Federation’s Collection North at Lake Merritt, Oakland and a percentage of each private sale goes to the Capital City Bonsai Association.

October 19 – 20, 2013 Union City: Yamato Bonsai Kai: Annual Show at Southern Alameda County Buddhist Church, 32975 Alvarado-Niles Road. Hours: Noon to 7 PM Saturday & 10 AM to 5 PM Sunday. Demonstration each day at 2 PM by Johnny Uchida. Special guest David Nguy will join in the demonstration on Saturday (only)! Free admission and parking. Benefit raffle drawing each day after the demo, dinner Saturday evening from 5 PM to 6 PM and Sunday Morning workshop available. Large Vendor and Plant Sale area. October 26 – 27, 2013, Sacramento: Capital City Bonsai Association: 14th Anniversary Show to support the GSBF Bonsai Garden at Lake Merritt and the Sacramento bonsai clubs. Location is the Shepard Garden and Arts Center, 3330 McKinley Blvd.  Show hours are Saturday, 10AM-5PM and Sunday, 10AM-4PM. Demonstration each day at 1:30PM by sponsor clubs with bonsai benefit drawings to follow. Vendor and club member sales available. For more information contact Gary Judd at 916-622-8048

 October 31 – November 3, 2013 Burbank: California Golden State Bonsai Federation (GSBF) Convention XXXVI: “Bonsai Artist Studio: Outside the Box” Marriott Hotel Los Angeles Burbank Airport. Headliners: David DeGroot, Suthin Sukosolvisit and Peter Warren. Offsite field trips offered Wednesday, October 30 afternoon. Convention Thursday, October 31 thru Sunday, November 3, 2013. December 7, 2013, Fresno: Fresno Bonsai Society: 5th Annual Bonsai Yard Sale, 736 West Browning Avenue. Hours: 9 AM – 2 PM. Pre-bonsai, bonsai, pots, accent plants, stones, books and all things bonsai. Anyone is welcome to buy or sell. Contact Ralph Schroeder for more information at ralsch@sbcglobal.net.

BONSAI SEKIYU KAI (meaning plant & stone lovers club) is a non-profit educational and social organization devoted to developing skills fundamental to the art of bonsai (miniature trees) and suiseki (viewing stones).  The club was formed in June 1976 with its first show in 1977.  As a member of the Golden State Bonsai Federation and part of the Capitol City Bonsai Association, we support Bonsai Collection North in Oakland.  Dues are $25 per year for individuals, $35 for families.
